ÁLVARO URBINA
Viña del Mar, Chile
2015 EDITION
Álvaro is currently working for the Viña del Mar-Quillota Health Service as a consulting architect where he is responsible for the construction of the first phase of the Dr. Gustavo Fricke Hospital, a high complexity hospital of some 124,000 m², in addition to several other smaller-scale projects.
“I made the decision to enroll in the LA(H)B in order to develop my experience in hospital architecture and to learn more about healthcare infrastructure in a different context, and where better than in Barcelona to expand my knowledge. My decision was also influenced by friends of mine who are doctors and they were very insistent that I study abroad to improve my formation so I could continue to grow in healthcare design.”
“In general the experience of the LA(H) B has been important in my professional development. In addition to learning on a technical level about specific strategies and decision making, it was enriching to be in contact with other professionals and share experiences. As architects we need to be aware of how we can contribute to the improvement of everyday life and above all how we can improve the coexistence of people and the environment, which is an urgent issue today. In this sense, healthcare infrastructure is composed of urban and/or rural facilities that because of their scope have a huge impact on people, taking on an important role in the quality of life and the environment.”
