The project for this hospital is based on three concepts: integration with the city, humanization and innovation. Due to its setting in the center of Barcelona, the heights of the surrounding buildings were respected, and routes for pedestrians were improved, reducing the impact from motor vehicles. To enhance both the users’ and the neighbors’ experiences of the building, a public park will be created on the western edge of the site. The building also has interior patios guaranteeing natural light, ventilation and excellent views over its surroundings from all floors. Room for innovation is ensured thanks to a modular structure of slender steel pillars covered by concrete, meaning that the layout can be adapted, and altered to allow for the introduction of medical equipment involving new technologies.
